How to Understand : Instagram Metrics
Post on April 19, 2021
We’ve discussed many times before that Instagram has played a vital role for brand-building in this digital landscape. In this fast-paced world, brands that thrive are brands utilize these digital platforms to their advantages. However, we know that to gain those benefits, we first need to understand Instagram properly. And that of course includes, arguably one of its most important features, Instagram Metrics. These metrics involves variety of numbers that measures how your post is performing, and the 3 most used metrics are impression, reach, and engagement.
1. Impression
The number of impressions means the total number of times people saw your feed or stories. It counts every time someone looks at your content, whether it be the same or different people. This would mean that even if 1 person kept looking at your post, Instagram would keep counting that as a new impression. Due to its nature, impression naturally has the highest number compared to other measurements.
It’s always good to keep in mind that a high impression doesn’t necessarily mean it’s great at spreading brand awareness to a lot of people. In order to determine that, you will need to look for other metrics in conjunction with the number of impressions.
2. Reach
Unlike impressions, reach counts the total number of unique people that saw your post. This means that it counts as a new reach if it’s a new account that looked at your post. Each unique account would be counted only once, no matter how many times they’re looking.
This metric is a better measurement in determining just how many people are exposed to your post. If your impression is very high with a considerably low reach, then that means only a few people are actually seeing your post but they’re seeing it multiple times. This could mean a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your goals. Few people seeing it many times would reinforce brand recall, meanwhile it could also mean that your brand awareness might not be as widespread as you might want it to be. If you’re not happy with it, then it’s always best to re-adjust your Instagram strategy for the future.
3. Engagement
Meanwhile, engagement is completely different from both impression and reach. It doesn’t count how many people saw your post, but instead how many interactions people have with it. Engagements involve any action that people can take in regards to your post, such as like, comment, share, save, and etc.
In this current Instagram algorithm, engagements are becoming increasingly important as it is one of the main determining factors on whether your post will appear first or last in your followers’ feed. It really speaks to how much Instagram value engagement as it speaks more volume than just scrolling past through and seeing a post.
One of the things you can do to increase engagement is to invite your followers to take more than 1 action on your post. As every interaction is counted as a new engagement (for example, a like and a comment on the same post would be counted as 2), therefore, it’s always better to encourage your followers not only to like and comment but also share so that your engagement number can constantly increase.
Now that you understand what this different numbers mean, you can now re-evaluate your current digital strategy and make necessary changes to achieve your goals.
